These textile totems are wall hangings made from mudcloth or bogolan by Atelier Autodidacts Anti Algorithm (AAAA) which is an artisan cooperative from Mali. Each pattern is dyed and painted onto the Malian cotton fabric by hand using local herbs and fermented mud from the River Niger. All stages of the making of the AAAA Bogolans are done by hand. From picking the cotton, spinning, weaving, dyeing and painting. This is a slow art form in every sense.
As each piece is lovingly made by hand, no two pieces are alike. Any imperfections in the weaving, pattern design or embroidery are part of its beauty.
